The Intergenerational Persistence of Lifetime Earnings
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper proposes a new method for estimating the intergenerational persistence of lifetime earnings from data that contain only short sections of individual earnings histories. The approach infers lifetime earnings persistence from the persistence of short earnings averages together with information about the stochastic process governing individual earnings. I nd that lifetime earnings are substantially more persistent than estimates of average earnings persistence suggest. Regressing sons on fathers log lifetime earnings yields a coe¢ cient of 0.54. Proxying for lifetime earnings using ve year earnings averages implies a coe¢ cient of only 0.37 and hence a bias of one-third. The bias is much stronger, if observations with zero earnings are not excluded from the sample. These ndings are robust against alternative assumptions about the data generating process for earnings. Nonlinear Estimation of Lifetime Intergenerational Economic Mobility and the Role of Education
Previous studies of intergenerational income mobility have typically focused at on estimating persistence across generations at the mean of the distribution of sons’ earnings. Here, we use the relatively new unconditional quantile regression (UQR) technique to consider how the association between parental income in childhood and sons’ adult earnings vary across the distribution of sons’ earning...
متن کاملMoving Towards Estimating Lifetime Intergenerational Economic Mobility in the UK
Estimates of intergenerational economic mobility that use point in time measures of income and earnings suffer from lifecycle and attenuation bias. We consider these issues for the National Child Development Study (NCDS) and British Cohort Study (BCS) for the first time, highlighting how common methods used to deal with these biases do not eradicate these issues. To attempt to overcome this, we...
متن کاملDo Redistributive Policies Promote Intergenerational Mobility?
Numerous public policies are aimed at improving the earnings opportunities for children of the poor and at reducing lifetime earnings inequality. This paper investigates to what extent such policies accomplish their objectives. A quantitative theory of intergenerational mobility and lifetime earnings inequality is developed and parameterized to match selected features of U.S. data. Numerical ex...

Intergenerational Earnings Mobility among the Children of Canadian Immigrants We analyze the intergenerational income mobility of Canadians born to immigrants using the 2001 Census. A detailed portrait of the Canadian population is offered as are estimates of the degree of generational mobility among the children of immigrants from 70 countries. The degree of persistence as estimated in regress...
متن کاملIntergenerational Mobility in Earnings and Occupational Status
A large literature has measured the regression to the mean in earnings and occupational status. One conclusion of this literature is that earnings regress to the mean more rapidly than status. This paper provides a theoretical model for intergenerational mobility in both status and earnings and examines its implications empirically. We consider the theoretical implications of parental investmen...
